So many romantic films paint women as incomplete without a soulmate that it's refreshing to see what happens from a male perspective. In 500 Days Of Summer. Tom meets a girl, Summer, and falls in love. Unfortunately for Tom, Summer doesn't believe in love.

The film's non-linear structure - it flashes back and forward in time - reflects the way you remember a period of time, particularly a relationship, flicking between highs and lows.

It kicks off on Day 488, with a shot of the couple sitting on a park bench, holding hands. It quickly moves on to one of the many times Summer suggests she and Tom stop seeing each other, leaving Tom broken mess as he smashes all his plates.

The back and forth of the narrative has the potential to be annoying, but it's actually a clever way of revealing where the cracks in the relationship lie.

The indie flick features many unexpected moments, such as the hilarious Enchanted-inspired dance routine and a split-screen 'what if ...' scene.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt shines as the naive Tom, while the doe-eyed Zooey Deschanel is perfect as the girl everyone hates to love.
