A visit by staff of entertainment giant Warner Music to a Neway Karaoke Box venue has led to the chain being sued for copyright infringement.

Warner is seeking unspecified damages from Neway, which operates 23 karaoke bars in Hong Kong, for alleged unauthorised use of its songs.

Lawyers for Warner said yesterday the staff heard the songs being played when they visited the club.

The complaint, lodged on February 8, was brought by WEA international, Atlantic Recording Corp, Warner Bros Records, Warner Music Hong Kong, Warner Music Taiwan, and Warner Music UK.

The group is seeking an interim injunction to stop Neway playing its songs until the case is resolved.

In the Court of First Instance, Mr Justice Anselmo Reyes granted 21 days for the plaintiffs to file evidence in support of the injunction and a further 21 days for Neway to reply before he would set a date for a hearing.
