A minute's silence will be observed at tonight's Fortis Lunar New Year Cup in remembrance of former Hong Kong international Wan Chi-keung, who died yesterday aged 53 as a result of organ failure, his family said.

A pall of sadness has descended upon the annual showpiece as three teams kick off the event, which features a new playing format with each side taking part in two 45-minute matches.

'Wan Chi-keung is one of the best footballers to have played the game here and deserves a minute's silence for his contribution to football,' Kitchee manager Ken Ng Kin said.

Pohang Steelers are favourites to win the tournament, with local clubs Kitchee and TSW Pegasus standing in the Korean club's way of lifting another trophy. Steelers won the inaugural AFC Champions League in November before finishing third in the Fifa Club World Cup the following month.

The Pohang squad includes 31-year-old South Korea international Seol Ki-hyeon, a veteran of two World Cup finals, who spent three seasons with English Premier League side Fulham before joining Steelers last month.

Ng said the tournament's unusual format was necessary given that it had to be played over just one day instead of the traditional two.
