When it comes to marriage, French actor Jean Reno has plenty of experience. The 60-year-old has been married three times, which makes him well qualified to play the role of a marriage counsellor in Couples Retreat, a comedy directed by Peter Billingsley.

Reno plays Dr Marcel, who runs a therapy resort on an island called Eden. Four couples - played by Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell, Jon Favreau, Faizon Love and Kali Hawke - arrive at the island and are made to confront their own problems, which Marcel helps them solve with some of his bizarre methods such as swimming with sharks or pairing up at intimate yoga sessions.

However, Reno, whose many other films include The Professional (1994), says that, unlike Marcel, he is no expert at relationships and he is still learning from his own.

What do you think of your role as a marriage therapist? Dr Marcel is a king of a psychiatrist who is in charge of healing the broken relationships of couples. To me, for a person who is responsible for a relationship between a man and a woman, he has to be very humble.

So is being humble also your own love philosophy too? Yes, you have to be very humble when it comes to love. But I would say everyone is different in terms of love, pleasure and desire - humans are a lonely species after all - so I suggest that people trust their own instincts. What works for someone else's relationship may not work for yours.

You've been married three times - do you think this has made you an expert on relationships? No, I learn more from my own experience and from each of my marriages ... I would say movies about couples' relationships can help too but only in a little way. What happens in your life is far more concrete and solid than the vague portrayal in front of the camera.
