Fifteen-year-old Amy Rose Coxall died in a go-kart accident last week. Amy and her friends were karting at the Diamond Coast International Kart circuit in Lung Kwu Sheung Tan village when her scarf became caught in the wheels of her vehicle.
The British girl was rushed to the nearest hospital where she was declared dead. She was a Year 11 student at Island School, Mid-Levels.
Legislators accused the government and the Hong Kong Kart Club of failing to regulate go-karting. They also said people took karting too lightly.
Background
A go-kart is a small, open, four-wheeled vehicle. Go-karts can reach maximum speeds of 150 kilometres per hour. You don't need a driving licence to drive a go-kart. But you must be over 11 years old, and beginners have to be trained.
Minor injuries are frequent on go-karting circuits. But in January 2001, a 20-year old student was seriously injured when her scarf got caught in the wheels of a go-kart in Macau.
