Jewellery maker Nicole Moja was born in France and raised in Italy, but deep down she's quite sure she's Asian. Splitting her time between Tokyo, Bali and Hong Kong, she's essentially never left the East since graduating from school. 'I finished my university in Tokyo where I spent 12 years,' Moja recalled. 'I moved to Hong Kong in 1978 where I spent another 20 years. I love the environment of Bali and the craftsmanship there, so that's where I moved after Hong Kong. I still come to Hong Kong four times a year. I was in the fashion business before but my passion is jewellery design so I put together my collection 10 years ago.' Not surprising, her accessories have a distinctive regional flavour. Using gemstones like rubies, emeralds, sapphires, diamonds and South Sea pearls, Moja was back in town to present a trunk show last week, and will be doing so again tomorrow from 2pm to 7.30pm at Azure. 'I use mainly semi-precious stones in my designs,' she says. 'Apart from my own designs, I've also worked with other talented designers. In this Hong Kong show, I brought with me works from two French designers.' That might be her only connection with her birth nation. 'I like the French flair in Paris. But I love Asia. I am an Asian.'
