The Chinese Communist Party should use the centenary of the 1911 Xinhai Revolution to engage Taiwan and other political parties, delegates from the mainland's top political advisory body said yesterday.

Xiu Fujin - vice-chairman of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang, one of eight registered minor non-communist parties on the mainland - had suggested the Communist Party set up an organising committee to coordinate massive activities on the mainland for the 100th anniversary, China News Service reported.

Mainland authorities 'should use the current peaceful cross-strait relations as a communications platform between the Communist Party and the Kuomintang to co-ordinate centenary commemorative activities', Xiu told the full-house meeting of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

'[We should] also invite relative political parties, organisations, public figures and scholars in Taiwan to take part in the activities.'

Xiu also advised Beijing to organise large-scale celebrations and related activities nationwide.

Authorities in both Beijing and Taipei agree that the Xinhai Revolution, which began on October 10, 1911, led to the overthrow of the Qing dynasty and paved the way for the establishment of the Republic of China by the Kuomintang.
