Chinese ethics not a suitable subject for the modern age
Some correspondents have argued that it would be beneficial for young people to study Confucius.
I accept that Confucianism can tell you how to become a better person by learning more about righteousness and integrity, as well as loyalty, filial piety and continence.
But I doubt if such grand ideas will take root in the minds of most Hong Kong people. We are already dominated by materialism. And we all have such busy schedules.
People pin a lot of hope on the next generation, forgetting that these young people are already being suffocated by schoolwork, cramming courses and exams. Only those who are studying under the old education system will bother studying Confucianism because it is part of a compulsory subject.
Of course, it would be perfect if the ultimate goal of Confucianism - social harmony - is reached. Problems like drug abuse and corruption will not be solved simply by introducing Confucianism to people in the city.
We should respect our culture. But given the social problems we now have, instead of empty words, immediate action should be taken to deal with these issues.
