Flamboyant TVB general manager Stephen Chan Chi-wan yesterday appeared unfazed by his high-profile arrest last week, saying the truth would be upheld.

In his first public appearance since he was arrested on suspicion of graft last Thursday, Chan, 50, said: 'I'm doing very well.'

Accompanied by his lawyer, Ivan Tang Yiu-wing, Chan, who has been suspended from duty, said he could not comment on the case as it was being investigated. He did not mention TVB during the three-minute briefing and did not take questions.

'I can't deny the changes happening in my life lately. At the end of the day, who has not experienced change in their lives? But if you also encounter inexplicable change, do not panic - and do not give up. This is because what is true cannot be false, and what is false can never be true,' Chan said.

Chan also explained why he wore a surgical mask last Friday when he was released on bail by the Independent Commission Against Corruption. 'I knew that many media friends were waiting for me on that night, so I tried to take care of my appearance before I left [the ICAC].

'Unfortunately, I scratched my face carelessly [when I shaved]. Therefore, I put on a surgical mask so that people wouldn't get the impression that I got the wound from the ICAC,' Chan said.
