Public's distrust of Beijing at six-year high, survey shows
The Hong Kong public's distrust of the Beijing and Hong Kong governments has increased by 8 and 6 percentage points, to 29 per cent and 26 per cent respectively, since December, a survey shows. The proportion of those surveyed who voiced no confidence in the 'one country, two systems' formula has also increased three points, to 31 per cent, according to a University of Hong Kong survey. Pollster Dr Robert Chung Ting-yiu said people's distrust of Beijing and lack of confidence in 'one country, two systems' were at six-year highs.
Review of traffic over plan to scrap Mid-Levels moratorium
The Transport and Housing Bureau says it will review traffic conditions before deciding whether the Mid-Levels moratorium - an almost 40-year-old policy that restricts development to ease traffic flow to the hilly area - should be scrapped. The move comes after a majority of Central and Western District councillors yesterday challenged a government study that said the impact on traffic flows would be limited if the moratorium was removed after the MTR's West Island Line opens in 2014.
Four in five suffer illness from bad indoor air quality
Nearly four in five Hongkongers have suffered at least two symptoms of sick-building syndrome - health problems resulting from poor indoor air quality, according to a survey by Ipsos. A fifth of the 1,010 respondents said they had taken sick leave as a result and nearly half said they could not concentrate at work. The three most common symptoms were fatigue, nasal congestion and headaches. More than a quarter of those surveyed rated indoor air quality in Hong Kong as 'very poor' or 'bad'.
