Proud mum Sarah O'Connor has named her newborn son Jazz ... after he made an accelerated arrival into the world on the back seat of a Honda Jazz.
O'Connor, a 33-year-old teacher, was on her way to Prince of Wales Hospital, Sha Tin, after her labour pains started when little Liran Jazz decided he could not wait for her to reach the maternity ward to make his appearance.
Helped by midwife neighbour Hulda Thorey, who made the journey to the hospital with Sarah and husband Paul, Liran Jazz was delivered in the back seat of the 1.6 litre four-door hatchback in the hospital car park as stunned staff stood by outside.
Sarah, who is individual-needs co-ordinator at Clearwater Bay School and lives in Sai Kung, said a wrong turn by her husband may have led to Liran Jazz's unorthodox birth place on March 8.
'He has driven me to countless appointments and still managed to take a wrong turn before we got to the hospital and added the vital two minutes,' she said.
'I was lying on the back seat of the car and I knew the baby was coming out. My husband asked the hospital staff for a stretcher and they brought out a wheelchair. I said, 'I can't get into a wheelchair. I'm going to have the baby here.'
'My eyes were closed the entire time but I could hear everything. About 15 people rushed out from the hospital. Two or three of them were holding up sheets around the car to try to protect my dignity.'
