There's a famous saying about how one should act when in the Italian capital. But what should a pretty American do when she finds herself in a situation which would make even the smooth Romans flounder?
When In Rome is the story of Beth (Kristen Bell), a curator at the Guggenheim Museum in New York who is disillusioned with romance. 'She's a 'gallerina' - a term I've coined for young women who run any sort of gallery. It's sort of a high-pressure job, which is why she's always so frazzled,' Bell says.
To add to the burn-out, Beth has to fly to Rome to attend her sister's wedding. There she meets Nick (Josh Duhamel) and feels a connection, despite her cynicism. Duhamel has a zany quality that makes his character particularly amusing. 'One of Josh's greatest gifts is his ability to be physically funny. He was a college quarterback in real life, so he's very coordinated,' says producer Andrew Panay. 'But to watch him scramble, fall and run into things - it's absolutely, incredibly funny.'
But before anything romantic can happen in the Eternal City, Beth defiantly takes coins out of a supposed fountain of love. Little does she realise the coins belong to people who wished for love, and her actions will ignite the passions of those who threw them in - in favour of the woman who holds their coins.
'When she gets home, these suitors start to come after her. They're madly in love,' Bell says.
The strange suitors are played by some big name comics. Danny Devito is Al, a sausage magnate who is willing to give his right arm to make Beth his private museum guide; Will Arnett plays Antonio, an Italian painter who oozes artistic and exotic charm; Jon Heder plays Lance, a 'creepy street magician'; and Bell's real-life partner Dax Shephard plays narcissistic male model Gale.
