Why you can trust SCMP

Trust the Hong Kong Football Association to make a straightforward task of selecting a new national coach into a contentious topic by putting their feet in their mouths by adding utterly bizarre criteria to the skills the man should possess.

With South Korean Kim Pan-gon's caretaker contract ending last week, the HKFA has begun a search for a new head coach who will be in charge of the national side as well as the under-21 and under-23 squads.

The advertisement carried on the HKFA website said the new person should be 'fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin' as well as having 'knowledge in MS Office application and Chinese input'.

The immediate question that springs to mind is whether the HKFA is looking for a secretary to its chairman Brian Leung Hung-tak, or if they are xenophobic and intent on closing the door to foreigners.

If it is the former, this is sublimely ridiculous for, while we are not sure how adept Leung is on the computer, we are certain he can handle himself in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Yet if it is the latter, it should be worrying and serious questions need to be raised as to how this advertisement got into print and who is responsible for such a faux pas. We will never know.
