Caroliners beat Persiwa, but still have a mountain to climb
South China defeated Persiwa 2-0 at Gajayana Stadium in Java, Indonesia, yesterday, but their AFC Cup campaign is still expected to be an uphill battle.
It was their second victory over the Indonesians in group G in two weeks, thanks to goals from centre-half Chan Wai-ho and striker Leonardo da Silva, both in the first half.
The Caroliners thrashed Persiwa 6-3 in the first leg at Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground.
With seven points from four matches, South China lie second in the group, but still have to see off leaders Muang Thong United of Thailand and third-placed VB of Maldives to make it to the round of 16. Muang Thong United beat VB 3-2 in Male last night.
'We knew we could not afford a defeat after we were beaten by VB in the away match in mid March,' said team convener Steven Lo Kit-sing.
'We have now completed the first mission by winning both the home and away matches against Persiwa, the weakest team of the group, and we must keep marching on.'
