Part gymnastics, part burlesque, but sexy all the time, the Pole Divas troupe is gearing up for its second annual Hong Kong International Pole Dancing competition. The finals of this year's gyrating contest will take place at Club Prive on May 12. The preliminary rounds to decide the 12 finalists will be at the Pole Divas studio on April 28. The winner will have a chance to represent Hong Kong at the World Championships in Europe. Now that pole dancing has become the new Pilates for so many fitness-obsessed girls - and some guys - there's no shortage of interest in competing. In addition to such specialised studios as Pole Divas (6/F Wai Hing Commercial Building, 17-19 Wing Wo Street) and Pole Paradise (10/F CS Tower, 50-54 Wing Lok Street), recently opened by former Pole Divas instructor Symone Salamon, even regular gyms such as Pure now teach the dance previously associated with seedy bars and strip joints. The competition is open to women and men. Apply through www.poledivas-hk.com . For more info, call 2541 5157. But, please, no practising with the poles on MTR trains.
