Makers of the movie Trick or Cheat ran an announcement in newspapers apologising to 'King of Tutors' Kevin Ko Sik-ka after he sued them over a character he said closely resembled him. The economics tutor said he was satisfied with the apology and the issue was at an end. Ko sued over a character in the film, Seven Ko, who had sex with an examination official in exchange for questions in coming papers. The apology was jointly run by film producer Oxide Pang Chun and directors Jil Wong Pak-kei, Lau Wing-tai, Chan Wai-yan, Ho Gun-wan and Chan Cheuk-yin, who were named as defendants in the writ filed in the High Court in October last year. Published in a Chinese-language newspaper, it reads: 'The production crew of Trick or Cheat had no intention to use this film to make insinuations about Mr Ko by any means' and 'the content of the film was not directly or indirectly related to Mr Ko. We express our earnest apologies to Mr Ko for causing any damage to his reputation and any unease and inconvenience caused'. An assistant speaking for the tutor said Ko was satisfied with the public apology and would not pursue the proceedings. 'The incident is satisfactorily resolved now. We will not seek any responsibility from anyone from now on,' he said. The October writ, seeking unspecified damages, said the character had a similar appearance to the tutor, including wearing the signature black-rimmed glasses Ko wears in advertisements. The character's name, Seven Ko, also sounded similar to the tutor's name and would easily lead filmgoers to associate the character with Ko, it said. The writ said the film insinuated that the tutor was only able to help his students by obtaining exam questions and had prostituted himself to keep his job. It said the film caused 'extreme embarrassment and severely injured his feelings and career' and that the damage to Ko's reputation was permanent. The film, shown in 23 cinemas between September 3 and 23, had about 500 screenings during its run. Also named in the writ as defendants were distributor Universe Film, Daniel Lam Siu-ming, Chiu Suet-ying and Alvin Lam Siu-keung.
