Zany traveller Ian Wright does seem like he's comfortable anywhere. The Discovery Travel & Living regular was in town on Sunday and Monday to do some PR for his coming show, Out of Bounds (then, he's going to Koh Samui for some R&R). In the programme, the chatty English host visits less tourist-friendly parts of the globe, including remote regions of Siberia, Cuba and Syria. In person at LKF Tower's Balalaika Russian restaurant - so they can serve Siberian fare and experience the tundra-like conditions in the establishment's minus 20 degrees Celsius vodka room - he easily warmed to the 100 or so fans and audience there to listen to his stories and humorous adventures. One everyone enjoyed was about Wright, in Damascus, finding a lingerie shop selling a bra and knickers set that when you clap your hands, the clasps open and the underwear falls off. Yes, it's featured in an episode of the new show. During the Q&A, he also explained how he got his initial travel show gig. It seems Wright's audition tape was such a prank - 'I sat on a toilet and pretended I had diarrhoea' - that the casting director put it aside. When the television executives found other candidates boring and unimpressive, the casting director pulled out the tape as a joke. The rest, it turns out, is Discovery Channel history. Ian Wright: Out of Bounds starts on May 20 on Travel & Living.
