Kung Fu grandmaster Leung Ting, who was sentenced to two months in jail for assaulting his girlfriend, had the conviction against him quashed yesterday, as a High Court judge granted his appeal.
Leung is the founder of the International WingTsun Association and a pupil of renowned Kung Fung master Yip Man.
Counsel Kevin Egan argued that the magistrate misunderstood part of the evidence given by Leung, which led him to conclude that Leung was an untruthful witness.
Leung was convicted by Deputy Magistrate Ko Wai-hung in November last year for one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm at his Yau Ma Tei home on March 30 last year for attacking 45-year-old Rita Lip Sik-ying, his girlfriend.
The magistrate accepted Lip's evidence that Leung pushed her on to the floor, pulled her hair and banged her head on the floor five or six times and kicked her in the abdomen after they argued over his former wife.
The court had heard that Lip demanded HK$50,000 from Leung to have an abortion. Leung only gave her a HK$30,000 cheque before the attack and HK$20,000 in cash the next morning after the attack.
