Police believe they have stopped a brutal feud between two factions of the Wo Hop To triad society by arresting 25 suspects at Ap Lei Chau Estate.

The arrests were made by the Organised Crime and Triad Bureau on Monday night, after a tip-off that one of the gangs was mounting an attack.

The gang arrived at the estate's outdoor car park shortly after 9pm. Police swooped as they tried to drive out about 45 minutes later, intercepting six vehicles and arresting 25 males aged 17 to 45. Five beef knives were seized from one of the cars.

The suspects were being held for questioning yesterday on suspicion of unlawful assembly. No one had been charged.

Police say the two factions have been fighting since one muscled in on the other's illegal activities - including extortion from fishmongers and minibus drivers - and the feud intensified over the past few months.

'We believe our operation has successfully prevented a fight between two triad gangs,' Superintendent Cheng Fuk-chuen of the organised crime bureau said.
