ABOUT 600 students flocked to St Margaret's Church Hall last week to hear the 1994 Joint School Singing Contest - Concord. The show was organised by a group of students from the Guitar Club of St Paul's Secondary School, the Music Club of Diocesan Girls' School, the Music Society of Belilios Public School and the Folk Song Club of Queen's College. Anna Koo Kar-chun, of the contest organising committee, said singing was a great means of communication. ''Through the contest, we hoped to make our fellow students interested in singing, and raise their standard in the art.'' Most of the proceeds from the concert will go to the Children's Cancer Foundation. The organisers hope to raise over $5,000. The contest was divided into solo and group sections. Eight students from different schools went solo, while seven groups competed for the group prize. Most of the contestants came up with catchy dances to match their songs. The solo title went to Pam Chung Tat-yan, 13, of Tang Shiu Kin Victoria Technical School. She picked up 257 points for her rendition of the Sally Yeh hit, He. The song has brought Tat-yan plenty of luck at contests. He had helped her win three previous championships, and had now won her a fourth. ''When I heard I was in the final, I started practising the song every day. At one point, I had an awful scare when I developed a throat problem. I was scared and I cried!'' The Form Two student said she started entering singing contests when she was in Form One. Performing on stage, she said, gave her a great thrill. The enthusiasm of an audience helped her to perform even better, she added. Tat-yan said she owed a debt of gratitude to her two older sisters, who helped her with her singing and gave her the clothes to wear for the contest. She also thanked her mother and father, and ''beloved Aunt Kitty'', as well as seniors in her school, who had all given her encouragement. The second prize winner in the solo section was Vincent Chow Bing-fai of Queen's College, who sang Andy Hui's Loving All Night. Alan Kang of Diocesan Boys' School came third with Jacky Cheung's Only Want to Follow You for a Lifetime. In the group section, ''Chriscarnace'' came first with 218 marks. The second and third prize winners were a team of seven students from St Paul's School (Lam Tin) and the ''Queen's V'' respectively. Gracing the event were pop singers Steven Ma Chun-wai and Leung Hon-man, who praised the winners and participants, and told them to work harder to develop their talents. RESULTS Solo: 1.
