It can pay to be in politics

Baat Gwaa

Baat Gwaa had an interesting brainstorming session recently with a good friend, Alice, for some ideas on how and where to find high-paying jobs in Hong Kong.

As a political consultant, she believes salaries offered in the public sector are comparable, and sometimes better, than those in the private sector.

For example, a social customer relationship management director can make between HK$720,000 to HK$1million annually. Such jobs require 10 to 15 years of relevant experience.

'Online marketing jobs are also very appealing, but they still require years of hard work and toil before you can earn a decent salary,' Alice says.

'But if you are a young aspiring politician, all you need is a good cause and the support of a political party.

'Step one is to become a district councillor and the next step is the legislature. If you can make that transition in five years, which is quite achievable, you are talking about a salary jump from HK$20,000 to HK$69,000-plus per month.'

While Alice believes that talent is important, she points out that being in the right place at the right time is most important in marketing oneself.
