Show your true colours

Fung shui principles can be applied to the design and colour of business cards to boost success. Each type of work corresponds to one of the five elements in Chinese metaphysics - wood, fire, earth, metal and water.

In the cycle of birth, wood feeds into fire, which forms earth after it burns out. Earth then yields metal in the form of minerals. Metal melts to form water, which nourishes wood. In the cycle of destruction, wood is chopped down by metal, which is melted by fire which is then put out by water. The flow of water is hindered by earth, which is controlled by wood which grows into it.

Business cards should contain colours that correspond to the element of your work. There are three groups of water careers. The first includes shipping, production and sales of beverages and frozen foods, saunas and spas, and cleaning services.

Water also represents movement, so the second group of jobs includes transportation, tourism and import and export of goods. And, with water's connotations of intelligence and communication, the third includes jobs in the media, public relations and music.

People in these jobs should use black and blue - colours for water - or the colours of metal, which produces water, such as gold, white, silver and grey. Wood careers fall into three groups. The first refers to jobs involving furniture and textiles. Paper makes up the second, such as publishers and administrators. The last group involves teachers, social workers, nurses and doctors. People in these jobs should have colours associated with water and wood.

This is the first of a three-part series on fung shui and business cards.
