Genesis by Karin Slaughter Arrow Books HK$104
Working on the theory that one plus one might equal quite a lot more than two, Karin Slaughter's 9th novel combines characters from both of her bestselling series of crime novels. In the 'Grant County' corner, we have former medical examiner turned freelance investigator, Sara Linton. In the 'Will Trent' corner, we have the eponymous Will Trent and Faith Mitchell, Trent's partner at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Slaughter brings the trio together pretty smartish. Mitchell suddenly collapses at Atlanta's courthouse. Luckily Trent is on hand to rush her to Grady Hospital, where she is examined by Linton, who has moved to Atlanta following the death of her husband. Linton discovers that Mitchell is not at all well - bad news for her career as an agent. The sparks have hardly begun to fly when Linton is called to examine a naked woman who ran into the path of an oncoming car. The girl, who can only whisper her name (Anna), has been horrendously tortured. Trent visits the crime scene and uncovers an underground dungeon that would defy belief if it wasn't in a novel by Karin Slaughter.
