Ying Wa Girls' School is planning a multimillion-dollar project to redevelop its campus to accommodate the changing needs of students.

The decision to redevelop the Robinson Road campus in the Mid-levels coincides with the school's 110th anniversary this year.

According to the plan, new blocks will be built to replace the existing buildings, which have been in use since 1967. The school is planning to start the redevelopment in 2012, scheduled for completion in 2016.

Headmaster Ruth Lee Shek Yuk-yu says the new campus will have a spacious central courtyard where students can hold art and sports events. There will be green facilities such as rooftop gardens to encourage an eco-friendly school life.

Old desks and chairs that have been in use for almost 50 years will be restored, instead of replaced, to preserve traditions. The school is also planning to invite artist alumni to turn some old facilities into works of art.

'Our aim is to build a new campus equipped to meet new education needs in the fast changing 21st century,' Lee said.
