Space has always been a major issue in Hong Kong. Most flats in the city are tiny, and only those with deep pockets can afford homes that have large storage facilities.

However, there is a solution for those who don't want to part with their personal belongings that have a sentimental value.

The easy answer to where to store excess belongings is storage companies.

Bill Tyrrell, director of Self Store Asia, says there has been an increasing trend of using storage companies, adding that the sluggish state of the economy has contributed to a rise in demand.

'Many people had to [move] to smaller homes [because they either] lost their jobs or had to take a pay cut [during last year's financial crisis]. This meant that there wasn't enough space to fit all the things they [had previously owned], so they chose to store [these items],' he says.

Tyrrell also attributes the increase in business to more people taking a year off work to travel.

'When people leave Hong Kong for a year, they will choose not [to] keep their apartments or houses, and they would leave their stuff with us which is a cheaper option,' he says.
