HONG KONG restored a measure of international pride when they defeated Asian Games hopefuls Macau 2-1 in the annual Interport at King's Park yesterday. Hong Kong will not compete in October's Asian Games in Hiroshima as the local governing body feel the territory cannot compete at international level. But the territory, whipped together in just two training sessions, answered their critics yesterday by beating an outfit who are being groomed for greater things to reclaim the Interport trophy. The score-line was not a reflection of Hong Kong's dominance as one goal in each half from a disciplined local side easily saw the visitors off. Macau were a disappointment. Coached by Pakistani Hamid Ikram Tayab for almost four years, Macau were looking to retain the Interport title they won comprehensively last year, but were forced to play second fiddle this time around. The visitors did not have a single shot at goal in the first half and it was only after Hong Kong sat back towards the end of the match that they scored their consolation goal - but it was much too late. Macau, who were largely a young side, appeared disorganised in defence, lacked punch up front and allowed Hong Kong to dictate the midfield. They failed to find a way past Hong Kong's defence, marshalled well by Pakistan Association's Farooq Saeed. Club player Robin Markbreiter and Shaheen forward Jaime Collaco scored a goal each. Collaco fired a 63rd-minute goal to settle the matter after Markbreiter had put the territory ahead in the 19th minute. Saeed said: ''Our victory was all down to team-work. We were psyched up for the match and it was our team spirit which held us together. We had only two training sessions but we had more of the game and our midfield was very good. ''We were speaking to each other all the time and although our midfield was a bit tired in the second half we did enough to win. We could have won by a larger margin.'' Hong Kong dominated the first half and missed several scoring chances thanks to some good saves from the visiting goalkeeper Cheok Kock-on. After Markbreiter put the territory ahead when he split the defence and planted a low shot past Cheok, the Macau goalkeeper was kept busy, stopping Steven Rodrigues' 27th minute effort and Collaco's 28th-minute shot which was palmed away. Hong Kong slackened the pace in the second half but Macau were still unable to dictate terms. The territory picked up the pace again and Collaco made it 2-0, picking up Ashkar Ali's cross from the right and drilling his shot past Cheok. Macau made some headway towards the end of the match and Mario Melra scored his team's consolation goal, driving through the left flank before slamming past Vincent Cheung two minutes before time. Hong Kong and Macau finished the series tied at 2-2 in matches with Hong Kong winning the under-19 match 3-0 but Macau showing their strength in the under-16 match, which they won 3-0. Macau won the veterans' match 2-0.
