A married woman who extorted money out of her lover after they split up by posing as her enraged husband was spared a jail term yesterday because the judge said she was a victim in the affair. The District Court heard that Wong Ngan-ying, 42, was twice made pregnant by her lover and was jilted after she asked him for money to undergo a second abortion six months after the first. She was sentenced to 16 months in jail, suspended for two years, for a count of blackmail. Calling it an exceptional case, Judge Esther Toh Lye-ping dismissed the lover as 'a cruel and irresponsible' man. The court heard that Wong, angered by the separation, masqueraded as her husband and sent text messages demanding HK$300,000. She threatened she would find someone to beat him and rape his wife and daughter if he did not pay up. The man deposited HK$50,000 into the account of Wong's husband. He alerted police after she sent him another message demanding the rest of the money. Judge Toh said. 'The cruel and irresponsible man ... his name was not disclosed ... however [Wong] has to face embarrassment trying to rebuild her life.'
