Born and raised in the Philippines, Charice's road to success has been long and hard. Her mother was a single parent, and by the age of seven Charice was entering singing competitions.

Her break came in 2005 as runner-up on a Philippine show similar to American Idol. An appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show introduced her to an American audience.

Charice has come a long way, and with her self-titled debut album she certainly lives up to Oprah-sized expectations. The album showcases her vocal talent and range. Although all the songs are upbeat with a pop feel, they avoid being predictable.

The opening track, Pyramid featuring Iyaz, highlights her superb vocals. Iyaz more than holds his own. There is great chemistry between the two and their voices blend nicely.

But her true vocal potential - many have mentioned her in the same breath as Celine Dion and Whitney Houston - can be heard in Note to God. Her sultry voice holds the long notes without a quiver.

Charice provides a refreshing alternative to teen pop music. Unlike many so-called artists these days, she can actually sing. Charice comes as advertised: she has a voice that belies her tender years and slender frame.
