CHARGING villagers involved in a confrontation outside the Legislative Council last month would provoke more anger and protests among indigenous inhabitants, the leader of the Heung Yee Kuk warned yesterday.

Lau Wong-fat issued his warning at a mass rally held by the kuk to fight legislator Christine Loh Kung-wai's amendment granting female indigenous inhabitants the right to inherit land.

He vowed that the kuk would support those charged by police and would find lawyers to defend them.

Mr Lau, kuk chairman and the Legco representative of the group, said the move was not helpful in resolving the controversy surrounding New Territories land inheritance.

''This move does no help to the peaceful and rational resolution of the controversy over the New Territories (Amendment) Bill,'' he said.

At the rally, which was the last of three major rallies held by the kuk to fight Ms Loh's amendment, speakers criticised the Governor, Chris Patten, and Ms Loh and pledged to fight to halt the amendment.
