Hullett House

A new hotel in one of Hong Kong's oldest buildings, Hullett House's facilities include five restaurants. These opened late last year, but it took several more months for the accommodation to come on stream.

Guest facilities in the Victorian-era property, with its private terraced balconies, comprises 10 suites ranging in size from 800 sqft to 1,100 sqft. Each is named after an area of Hong Kong's coast, reflecting the complex's former role as the Marine Police headquarters.

Designer David Yeo, of the Aqua restaurant group, which manages Hullett House, took his inspiration from both Chinese and colonial British sources.

The largest unit, the Lido Suite, is dominated by classic Chinese black lacquer furniture and has access to three balconies. A prominent feature is a luxurious bathroom with its shimmering gold-tiled floor and claw-foot, free-standing bathtub. The design keynote of the Stanley Suite is bird cages, reflecting Hong Kong's old tea-house culture, while the Shek O Suite is outfitted with Chinese red lacquer furnishings with gold accents and takes its inspiration from Hollywood Road's antique shops.

The Silvermine Suite, with its Louis XIV style furnishings, is envisaged as the choice for honeymooners, while the Casam Suite is dominated by contemporary Chinese pop art. Large LCD televisions, DVD players, iPod stations and wireless broadband are standard to all suites, and rates range from HK$9,000 to HK$12,000 per night plus 10 per cent service charge, including continental breakfast for two at The Parlour. However, to commemorate the hotel's opening, rates start at HK$3,960 until June 30.
