IN the light of the April 7 police raid on Whitehead Detention Centre it seems even more necessary for the Government to establish a commission to protect the human rights of everyone living in the territory. It must be of great concern to the public that the police and the Correctional Services Department revised their figures for the amount of tear gas used as well as the number of Vietnamese injured during the operation. I sincerely hope that the inquiry into this matter will question why there was an attempt at a cover-up. In the lead up to the 1997 transition of sovereignty in Hong Kong, it is imperative that human rights are treated seriously and respected. If the Government sets a poor precedent there is no telling how the SAR government might react to any form of dissent - political or otherwise. CLIVE BURNS Kowloon
