We Are Scientists Barbara (PIAS) Following 2008's chart-topping, yet semi-stale Brain Thrust Mastery, We Are Scientists (WAS) have returned to their indie pop roots. WAS' stock has been on the rise of late: an MTV mockumentary series under their belts, a new album, new label and a new member in ex-Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows. The group's self-effacing humour and geek-chic cred have always stood them in good stead, and it looks as if they are set to deliver on the promise first seen on their 2005 major label debut With Love and Squalor. Clocking in at just over 30 minutes, Barbara is as short as it is sweet. Nice Guys and Rules Don't Stop combine sun-drenched vocal melodies, driving rhythms and chiming guitar hooks. It's simple, unadulterated pop and although neither track hits the highs of Nobody Move, Nobody Gets Hurt, they mark a welcome return to what WAS have always done best. However, too much of the album is lost in the attempt to impress. While WAS have honed their skills in creating infectious, arm-pumping pop, they have yet to master the art of longevity. Barbara is the sound of a band returning to their core. It won't live with you forever, but it was probably never meant to.
