After Father Alfred Deignan said the rites and an opening prayer, Democratic Party veteran Martin Lee Chu-ming, a good family friend, read an excerpt from the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible - 'To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.'

Joseph Chow Ming-kuen, a friend and former student of Chan, gave a eulogy to the man he called his role model.
