Director and writer of Ex is 25-year-old Heiward Mak Hei-yan, who has become the hope of the industry and the most sought-after filmmaker in Hong Kong following her debut feature High Noon, her co-written Love in a Puff, and this year's Amphetamine, which she edited.
Gillian Chung Yan-tung, of Canto-pop duo Twins, plays Yi, who has dumped her travel-writer boyfriend (Lawrence Chou Chun-wai) at the airport just before a trip together. Their break-up is witnessed by her ex-boyfriend, Ping (also played by a Canto-pop star, William Chan Wai-ting), who is present with his current girlfriend, Cee (Michelle Wai Si-nga).
Ping and Cee invite Yi, who does not have anywhere to stay, to their apartment for a few days. There memories flood back and romance sparks again between Ping and Yi, who is suffering after her latest of several break-ups.
Chan and Chung play their parts well. Chung shows her character's vulnerability while maintaining aloofness, walking into Ping and Cee's relationship with reckless amusement. Mak cogently drives home the hard-to-face fact that people are the sum of their past relationships, like it or not.
