Six people were killed and nine were injured, including a Hong Kong man, when all 11 cabins on an amusement park ride in Shenzhen turned upside down yesterday, the Shenzhen government said.
The tragedy occurred at 4.45pm on Space Journey, a spacecraft simulation ride, at Ecoventure Valley amusement park within the OCT East complex, according to the government statement.
Au Ming-ming, 34, of Hong Kong, suffered serious injuries to his head and arms and was undergoing surgery at Shenzhen People's Hospital late last night after being transferred from Yantian People's Hospital around 6.10pm, a nurse said.
An official from the Shenzhen Travel Association said: 'Au Ming-ming went to the amusement park without joining any travel group. His injuries were very serious.'
Au's cousin, who rushed to the hospital last night, said his injuries were serious but not life-threatening.
An executive of a tourist company, who witnessed the accident while waiting for his group of people riding Space Journey, said that the whole ride lasted around five minutes, and the accident happened as the cabins were about to land.
'All of a sudden, the cabins were turned upside down, and passengers start to fall. Not even their safety belts could hold them,' said the executive, who declined to give his name or the name of his company.
