The mainland's one-child policy has been a controversial issue. It has many shortcomings and violates human rights. I believe it should be abolished.

Many scholars and international organisations agree that it is a basic right for married couples to have children. However, the one-child policy severely limits their options and can have negative effects in the long term. For example, the rising number of elderly people will impose a heavy burden on the country's younger generation.

There will also be a labour shortage which could harm the mainland's development.

The one-child policy was introduced in 1978 to alleviate China's social, economic and environmental problems. But the country has 'grown up'. It is now an emerging superpower and has the ability to cope with any kind of challenges.

Considering the present conditions, the one-child policy should be scrapped to ensure a fair and humane society.
