KUI Tan booked a place at the Hong Kong Stadium on Sunday by beating Voicelink 2-0 after extra time in their Hong Kong FA Esso Cup quarter-final tie at Mongkok Stadium last night. After a dull and goalless 90 minutes, Kui Tan made the vital breakthrough after only three minutes of extra time with a left-foot volley from striker Lau Ping-kwan which beat Voicelink 'keeper Chan Hing-wing at his near post. As Voicelink pressed for an equaliser, they were caught out in injury time with a goal from the halfway line by Kui Tan midfielder Steven Raynes, whose shot sailed over Chan and into the net. Although Voicelink players left the field angry with the officials for turning down a couple of penalty claims in extra time, there was no denying the fact that Kui Tan have earned a place in the semi-finals. Despite having the lowest budget of the nine professional clubs in the First Division, Kui Tan have played with spirit and discipline to keep out of relegation trouble. And their reward for FA Cup wins over Sing Tao and now Voicelink is a crack at holders and league champions Eastern in the double-header semi-finals on Sunday. Kui Tan's former Hong Kong national team 'keeper, Yam Wai-hung, was delighted with the efforts of his teammates - but not surprised by the fact that they keep producing results against the odds. ''The main thing is that our Chinese players are enjoying their football,'' said Yam, formerly with South China. ''They have played to a consistent level and their form has never dropped. The foreign players have come in and worked hard and made the most of the chances we have created. ''Every time we win it is a surprise to many people but not to us because we know we are a good little side.'' On paper, Voicelink looked to have the stronger side, especially with a four-man midfield which included Glenn Humphries, Tim Bredbury and Carlton Fairweather wide on the left. But their two strikers, Wong Chi-keung and Lee Fuk-wing, were well marked by Kui Tan's two stoopers Richard Webb and Richard Crossley, both of whom have had outstanding seasons in a largely rearguard action.
