AN unemployed man and his lover lured a mentally retarded woman into becoming a prostitute, the District Court heard yesterday. The retarded woman, 23, yesterday gave evidence before Judge Longley. Under cross-examination by the man's defence counsel, Aziz Hoosen, the woman said she first met the man in April 1990. Her mother had taken her to live with him. She denied a suggestion she had first met the man by providing sexual services for him in Shamshuipo. The 43-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to a charge of having unlawful sex with a defective and to living off the earnings of prostitution between mid-1990 and May 21 last year. His lover, 48, who lived with him and worked as a prostitute and hawker, denies a charge of causing the prostitution of a defective on May 21 last year. It is the Crown's case that since 1990, the female defendant began taking the 23-year-old to Shamshuipo to have sex with four to five customers a day. The prosecution says the retarded woman received about $200 from each customer and handed the money to the male defendant, who also allegedly had sex with her. The 23-year-old first testified that her father had told the accused woman that she was mentally retarded, but later agreed with a suggestion by defence counsel Andy Hung that the conversation had never taken place. She said she would leave the money which she earned from prostitution to the male defendant as rent and other expenses. Mr Hung appeared for the 48-year-old woman. The hearing continues today.
