The runner-up of the fifth season of American Idol, Katharine McPhee, has changed since her first solo album, which debuted at No 2 on the Billboard 200 in early 2007.

Not only has she gone from a long-haired brunette to a sassy blonde, McPhee has changed her approach to music in her second album, Unbroken. She co-wrote even more of the tracks, and reveals a more mature, vulnerable side.

The album features a mix of genres. Opener It's Not Right is a rock-tinged track in which McPhee shows off her tough side while singing of life's frustrations. This is followed by Had It All, which starts softly and builds to an upbeat middle section. McPhee sings about realising how a love she had was really good.

How is a less upbeat number. Although it is full of questions, ultimately it is about being hopeful and setting yourself free. Most of the softer songs display vulnerability, or discuss pain or uncertainty.

Highlights include Lifetime and the bonus track Brand New Key, two very refreshing and cheerful tracks, especially compared to the majority of the songs on the album, which have a tendency to be a bit heavy.
