SCMP Reporter

The outer bands of Severe Tropical Storm Conson  are expected to bring showers and isolated squally thunderstorms to Hong Kong today. The first tropical storm of the season was heading for Hainan  Island. At midnight, it was 640 kilometres south-southwest of Hong Kong and moving west-northwest at 20km/h across the northern part of the South China Sea. The No 1 standby signal was issued at 7.20pm.
