Chief Justice Andrew Li Kwok-nang donned his judicial robes for the last time yesterday and bid farewell to the legal profession and the public, describing himself as a 'son of Hong Kong' called to duty in historic times.

Lawyers, judges and members of the public attended a ceremonial farewell sitting at the Court of Final Appeal yesterday as Hong Kong's first chief justice gave thanks for the support he has received and bid farewell.

'In a few moments, I shall be taking off my judicial robes for the final time. In a few weeks' time, I shall be laying down the burdens of office to resume life as a private citizen.

'I have always been blessed by the steadfast and unfailing support of my wife and my family. As I bid farewell, I can say in all conscience that I have no regrets. I have always striven to serve in a spirit of humility to the best of my ability,' an emotional Li said.

He reiterated that it had been the 'greatest honour' of his life to serve as the first chief justice.

'As a son of Hong Kong, it was my duty to serve in these historic times with the reunification of Hong Kong as part of China. I thank the community for giving me the opportunity to contribute,' he said.

Representatives of the Law Society, the Bar Association and the administration paid tribute to Li and his achievements - in particular the foundation of the Court of Final Appeal and Li's dedication to nurturing talent and inspiring others to serve the community.
