I WRITE in support of Mr Lukas Schwarzacher's letter, which appeared in the South China Morning Post, on April 21. Since I first stayed on Cheung Chau in 1990 I have advised my friends not to visit Hong Kong without taking the ferry to this lovely island. This year, on my third visit, I found many changes, but Westerners and Hong Kong Chinese alike who live there, respect the shrines of an ancient fishing community. The Fire Services Department exists to save life and property, not to destroy beauty and religious tradition. When I and my European friends, next visit Cheung Chau I hope we shall still be able to admire and honour the great banyan tree. BRONWEN J. JONES Dolgelley, Wales
