The popular Facebook game FarmVille is launching a new event to promote organic farming and green living to its daily 20 million players. Zynga Game Network, the creators of FarmVille and other popular Facebook games, is teaming up with Cascadian Farm, an organic food company. For the very first time, FarmVille will be offering its players a specific company product to buy. Farmers will be able to purchase and plant blueberries from Cascadian Farm on their virtual land. As added incentive, Cascadian crops harvest faster and sell for more cash than other crops. The virtual Cascadian products have been purchased by more than 1 million players, with a total 310 million blueberry trees planted. The objective is to promote green living and organic farming, and raise awareness of eco-friendly companies like Cascadian Farm. Cascadian Farm sells 75 products from frozen fruit to cereals. Grown on a 15,000 acre piece of land at the foothills of the North Cascades mountain range, Cascadian products are organic and environmentally friendly. The real-life Cascadian Farm has been recreated on FarmVille as a virtual farm and a beacon of sustainability, where other players can visit. We are 'trying to tap into social media', says Tim Goldsmid, marketing manager for Cascadian Farm.
