Dogs of war as Soda makes Max mad
IT may have been a happy party as far as everybody else present, including First Lady Lavender Patten, was concerned. But for the First Dog and first Dr Dog of the territory it was war.
Max, the first Dr Dog to visit patients in hospitals, had little doubt that he was the star of the show. But Soda, the Pattens' - it's got to be said - mercurial pet, thought otherwise.
A few growls later and they were both going for each other and had to be forcibly separated, with a look of admonition from Lavender settling Soda pretty quick.
Started by Jill Robinson (pictured above with Lavender), of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, three years ago, the scheme has attracted 70 volunteers, including Lavender, who visit 25 centres.
Said Lavender, who takes Soda and companion Whisky to visit handicapped people in a Sha Tin-based hospital regularly: ''It has been a real joy to see the expression of joy on the faces of the handicapped people. For many it has been the first animal they have ever touched.''
