Six men were being held for questioning last night after a brawl in a popular Tsim Sha Tsui bar street left one man dead and another severely injured.
A 24-year-old man died from a single stab wound to the stomach suffered in the melee, which began in Knutsford Terrace and spilled into  Kimberley Road.
Another man, 29, who tried to mediate, was stabbed in the back with a broken bottle and was in critical condition in hospital last night. A man, 23, and a woman, 20, were slightly injured.
Police last night classified the case as murder.
A crime squad officer said investigations indicated that teasing of young women  sparked the brawl. 
The fight, which broke out at about 4am yesterday, brought a call from a Yau Tsim Mong district councillor for stepped-up police patrols in the area.
Chan Wai-keung  said Knutsford Terrace was not a known crime black spot but the killing rang alarm bells over law and order.
'It's the first such serious crime that has happened there. Police should pay more attention to the law and order situation at the site and enhance patrols,' he said. 
Referring to television pictures of the brawl taking place  in front of police, he asked if enough officers had been sent to the scene. 'Police should review the deployment in the incident,' he said. 
Police said the dispute, involving more than 20 people from four groups, broke out  after they had left an upstairs bar in Knutsford Terrace, and then spilled into Kimberley Road - just 500 metres from Tsim Sha Tsui police station.
Cable TV showed one of the brawlers chasing another and pushing him to the ground in front of police, who had to pull the two apart.
Cheung Kin-lung, 24, was found injured  at the scene. 'We are still trying to work out  how he was stabbed,' an investigator said.
All the injured were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where Cheung was declared dead at 11.15am. An autopsy will be carried out today to find out how Cheung died. 
The woman who was slightly hurt was in a stable condition while the man who was similarly injured was discharged after treatment.
 About 40 officers searched the area yesterday afternoon but no weapon was found. 
A New Zealand man  was arrested at the hospital. 'Bloodstains were found on his shirt,' an officer said, adding that it was not known why the uninjured man had gone to hospital.
Wearing a white vest, the 25-year-old man, who was unhurt, was handcuffed before being escorted to a police vehicle.  He works in the city and has a Hong Kong identity card.
Police arrested another man, also 25, at the scene.
Later in the day, police arrested another four men, aged 22 to 29, included the 29-year-old critically injured man. They were detained overnight. 
Chan said he would raise the law and order situation in Knutsford Terrace at a district council meeting next Thursday.  
Yesterday's killing was the second murder case in eight days in Tsim Sha Tsui. On Tuesday last week, a 29-year-old Mongolian man was killed in a guest house in Chungking Mansions  in Nathan Road.
Police figures recorded 17 murders in the first six months of this year. 
There were 27 homicide cases during the same period last year. The number of homicide cases rose to 47 for the whole of last year from 36 in 2008.
