There was magic in the air at cosmetics brand Clinique's launch party for its Repairwear Laser Focus line. Magician Louis Yan Chak-kuen entertained guests at an expansive suite overlooking Happy Valley racecourse, sharing the stage with celebrity assistants Janet Ma Sze-wai (right), singer-actress Karen Mok Man-wai (centre) and TV actress Fala Chen. For the finale, the magician and his helpers conjured up a giant bottle of Clinique anti-wrinkle serum from a cloud of paraffin smoke. It looked like the illusion was welcome entertainment for the guests, whose eyes appeared to have glazed over during a skincare lecture by South Korean dermatologist Dr Kim Dong-kun. The socialites, models and others may have heard a little too much on the subject of retinyl palmitate and acetyl hexapeptide-8, but after sampling the product, many murmured their approval. Janet Ma admitted being a fan of Clinique. A busy mother-of-three with flawless skin, her beauty secret is an uncomplicated three steps - cleansing, toning and moisturising - but she stresses it is a strict regimen. 'You cannot be lazy about it, not even for one night. I also get facials regularly.' At the end of the evening it was the guests' turn to do a disappearing act - which they did in a matter of minutes.
