Vampire spoof lacks bite

It was only a matter of time before the guys behind the Scary, Date and Epic Movies would make a vampire spoof.

From the quirky minds of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer comes Vampires Suck, a not-so-clever, no-holds-barred parody of the vampires and werewolves popularised by the Twilight craze.

Vampires are everywhere in the town of Sporks, Washington. Shortly after arriving in the town, Becca Crane (Jenn Proske), a typical American teen, becomes enchanted by Edward Sullen (Matt Lanter), a vampire with a conscience - despite the constant cravings, his clan refuses to drink human blood. But werewolf Jacob White (Chris Riggi) is soon competing for Becca's affections.

Like any spoof, the viewer needs previous knowledge of the orginal. Vampires Suck recreates scenes from the Twilight series - often down to the camera angle, slo-mo playback and even lines.

The absurdity gives you the odd chuckle, and recognising the spoofed material is probably the most interesting experience of the film. But the film tries too hard to be funny and falls flat.

Proske has nailed her misunderstood teen character down well and Vampires Suck occasionally does what it's supposed to do: make you laugh and, at times, cringe. But most of the jokes are too childish, crude and unpolished to be funny.
