Paintings, sculptures and installations can make homes attractive, but art consultant Angela Li says that it is important for inexperienced buyers to do their homework before making a purchase.
'Art pieces are luxury goods that come with a price, so people should do a lot of research before buying, if they aren't familiar with art, to make sure what they are paying is worth it,' says Li, owner of the shop Contemporary by Angela Li.
Pieces by young artists sell from HK$30,000 to HK$40,000 per item, while works by some well known artists sell for millions.
To determine whether a piece is worth the asking price, Li suggests looking up an artist's resume to see what past works they've created and in which shows their art has been exhibited. Gallery owners can also provide more information about an artist.
Li says she tries to introduce novice art buyers to pieces by well known artists that she thinks will hold their value.
However, she says that art prices fluctuate, and no one can predict whether a particular piece is a good investment.
