Mogwai Special Moves (Rock Action) Instrumental rock bands may seem quite commonplace these days with Caribou, Explosions In The Sky and !!! all releasing albums that bridge the gap between energetic cathartic release and contemplative soundtrack, but Mogwai were among the first on the scene. Now, 13 years after the Scottish five-piece released their debut Mogwai Young Team, their latest effort, Special Moves, shows ample promise of a bright future. There are plenty of firsts: first live album, first DVD accompaniment with extra tracks and at least one song from all six studio albums. Those who find some of their recorded material flat may finally see why they are such a famed live act. Mogwai's ability to accelerate from peaceful tranquility to chaotic cacophony is unparalleled. Recorded at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York, the opener I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead sets the tone with a guitar workout that goes from peaceful sunrise into gasoline-enhanced lake fire. Mogwai Vs Satan is like My Bloody Valentine fighting to the death against Sonic Youth. Just to show the group have range though, Cody boasts one of the group's rare vocals and concluding track Glasgow Megasnake proves the group can out-riff any metal act one could care to name.
