Looking for something to lift your heart? Then romantic comedy My Darling is a Foreigner could be just what you're looking for. Don't underestimate the film because of the 'original' title; it's light-hearted and funny in its portrayal of the problems faced in an interracial relationship. Directed by Kazuaki Ue, this is based on an autobiographical manga series by Saori Oguri. Like most films, if you've read the book, you'll spot differences in the film. The manga portrays Saori as self-assured and confident, whereas Mao Inoue's Saori in the film is shy and cute. But this is partly what makes the movie so charming. Her co-star, Jonathan Sherr, is not a stereotypically handsome American heart-throb, but his brown curls and beard make him adorable to watch. Considerate and willing to compromise between the two cultures, his sensitivity and sentimentality are attractive. Based on a comic series, the film occasionally uses animation. If you're not a big fan of manga, you may not appreciate this - or the idea behind the film. But the cartoon-like aspects make the film distinctive. This film wouldn't be complete without a helping of contentment and bliss, the typical elements of a romantic comedy. Combined with the 'aww'-inducing characters, it's the perfect solution when you're in the mood for something light.
